The St Mellons Social Club was granted permission in May 1968 to build and operate a model railway and storage hut at their own expense in St Julians Glebelands. The following year in December it was reported that a five year tenancy agreement with the Model Engineering Society was being prepared.
The St Mellons Model Engineering Society and the Welsh Steam Engine Society were jointly given permission to hold a mini rally of steam engines at St Julians Glebelands on Saturday 26th September 1970.
A model railway was still present in 1990, when there was discussion of its relocation, owing to development of the Brynglas / M4 relief road. In June 1993 the Leisure Services Committee approved the transfer of the Newport Model Engineering Society and its track to Spytty Park. This may not have taken place, as in September 1998 the Committee approved a request from the Society for a 25 year lease of land at the Glebelands allotment site, subject to consultation with the allotment holders and the consent of the Secretary of State for Wales.
