The St Mellons Social Club was granted permission in May 1968 to build and operate a model railway and storage hut at their own expense in St Julians Glebelands.[1] The following year in December it was reported that a five year tenancy agreement with the Model Engineering Society was being prepared.[2]
The St Mellons Model Engineering Society and the Welsh Steam Engine Society were jointly given permission to hold a mini rally of steam engines at St Julians Glebelands on Saturday 26th September 1970.[3]
A model railway was still present in 1990, when there was discussion of its relocation, owing to development of the Brynglas / M4 relief road.[4] In June 1993 the Leisure Services Committee approved the transfer of the Newport Model Engineering Society and its track to Spytty Park.[5] This may not have taken place, as in September 1998 the Committee approved a request from the Society for a 25 year lease of land at the Glebelands allotment site, subject to consultation with the allotment holders and the consent of the Secretary of State for Wales.[6]
